Importing a Blackboard Course into Canvas

Before following the steps below, you'll first need to export your course from Blackboard.
If you have not done that yet, you may follow the instructions for that process located HERE.

1. Navigate to your course in Canvas.
2. Click the Settings button at the bottom of your course menu.
3. On the right side of the Settings page you will see several buttons.
   Click the one labelled Import Course Content.
4. On the Import Content page, click the drop down menu labeled Content Type at the top of the page.
5. Select Blackboard 6/7/8/9 export .zip file.
   A Browse to button will appear.
6. Browse to the Blackboard zip file that you exported from your Blackboard course.
7. Select the Blackboard zip file.
8. Choose to add test questions (if any are included in your Bb zip file)
   to an existing question bank in Canvas or create a new question bank.
9. Select All Content or select Specific Content.
   The selection of specific content is accomplished in a subsequent step of the process.
10. In most cases, do not check the setting Overwrite assessment content with matching IDs.
11. Adjust events and due dates gives you the option to:
    • Shift all dates.
    • Substituting a day with a different day (e.g., move all Tuesday events to Wednesdays).
    • You also have the option of removing all dates and manually adjusting them on individual items after import
12. Click the Import button.
    You will see a progress bar.
13. If you checked the option to Select Specific Content after the import is complete
    you will see a button labeled Select Content.
14. Click this button.
15. You will see a list of course content arranged by item type. Either:
    • Check a box to select all items of a particular type (e.g., question banks).
    • Expand the list and choose only specific items.
16. Click on the course home page in Canvas to review the content that has been added.

NOTE: SLU's contract with Blackboard ends on May 20th, 2022, so migration must be completed before that date.
