Question?
I copied my course but the Panopto content did not copy over. Why?
Answer
Several individuals are encountering issues with Panopto content not appearing in the Panopto Content folder for the new semester.
It is important to note when using Course Copy in an LMS (Learning Management System) like Canvas or Blackboard, the LMS content is being copied, but that does not include the Panopto content which is a separate system.
Panopto is "integrated" into the LMS which means students can access lectures from the course menu instructors develop for the class. However, the actual content needs to be in the current semester's content folder.
Panopto content is not managed like a simple YouTube, Vimeo, or other video link hosting which simply points to a recording that is available on the web. There are features in Panopto that protect intellectual property, analyze how much the content is being viewed, and even report if an individual student actually watched some or all of the content.
To do this, each semester a folder is created that is unique to the LMS for that semester which allows Panopto to manage membership and viewing privileges for the recordings. Panopto checks the enrollment in the LMS and if it can verify that the student is enrolled in the specific course in the specific semester, it will grant access to that student.
When using Course Copy from the previous semester, the LMS will replicate the link to the recording in the Panopto Content folder. The problem is; that link is pointing to the previous semester's course. New students were not enrolled in the previous semester's course so they will get a message requesting permission to view that content.
It is important to manage (move or copy) lectures into the current semester or instructors will lose the analytics, intellectual property protections and other features Panopto gives us.
