How To

How do I initiate my SLU password in Okta for the first time?

Resolution

Okta is the University’s security solution that handles SSO (single sign-on), password management, and multi-factor authentication. This article steps through the process of registering in Okta and creating your password.
NOTE: You are required to change your SLU Password before accessing SLU systems.

  1. Navigate to auth.slu.edu in your web browser.
  2. Log in using your SLU Net ID and default SLU Net Password.
You will find your SLU Net ID on the “Terms of Admission” sheet included with your Acceptance Letter.
Your initial SLU Net Password will also be provided as part of your onboarding paperwork.
  1. This will open a new browser tab and provide a series of settings to be selected and filled out. The first is your new password.
The following are the password requirements:
  • At least 12 characters
  • A lowercase letter
  •  An uppercase letter
  • A symbol
  • A number is not required
  • Spaces are allowed
  • No parts of your username
  • Does not include your first name
  • Does not include your last name
  • Your password cannot be any of your last 24 passwords
  • At least 1 hour(s) must have elapsed since you last changed your password
  •  Consider using a proper sentence with at least four words as a
password (such as a lyric, quote, or aspirational statement). Not only
will it be easy to remember, but it will also be nearly impossible to
    crack.
  • Using a proper sentence (beginning with a capital letter and ending
with a punctuation mark) will meet all criteria.
NOTE: A space counts as a standard character, not a special character.
  1. Next, you will specify your password recovery question and answer. This is used if you have forgotten your password. You can choose from a list of 19 different questions or create your own custom question. After selecting your question, type your answer below.
  2. It is now required to select a phone number to which you will receive an SMS text message to reset your password if you forget it.
    1. Click the Add Phone Number button.
    2. Select your country and enter your phone number including area code (but not country code), then click the Send Code button.
    3. Enter the code you receive via text message in the appropriate field in the next window and then click the Verify button. Once the system tells you that the number has been successfully verified, you may click the "Done".
  3. The next setting allows you to select a phone number to which you will receive a phone call to reset your password if you forget it.
    1. Click the Add Phone Number button.
    2. Select your country and enter your phone number including area code (but not country code), then click the Call button.
    3. Enter the code that you hear on the phone in the appropriate field in the next window and then click the Verify button. Once the system tells you that the number has been successfully verified, you may click the Done button.
  4. Finally, you will select a picture to use as a security image. Click on the image you wish to use.
  5. Click the Create My Account button below.
NOTE: It is advised to set up other MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication) methods for easier access. Articles on how to do this can be found below:
Set Up Okta Verify on Android for Multi-Factor Authentication
Set Up Okta Verify on iOS (Apple iPhone) for Multi-Factor Authentication
Set Up Text Messaging (SMS) for Multi-Factor Authentication

Now that you have your SLU Net ID and password configured, you can log in to mySLU to access SLU resources. This can be done by navigating to myslu.slu.edu and clicking the "Tools" tab.
