Body
Overview:
MyOpenMath is an online homework, assessment, and course management platform used primarily for mathematics and other quantitative subjects. It provides instructors with customizable question banks, automated grading, and learning resources that help support student practice and assessment. When integrated with Canvas, MyOpenMath can be accessed directly from a course and can pass grades between the two systems.
Primary Purpose:
MyOpenMath provides online homework, quizzes, and assessments that help students practice course concepts and receive immediate feedback on their work. It enables instructors to create, deliver, and grade assignments efficiently while supporting student learning through guided practice and assessment tools.
Accessing MyOpenMath:
The application is available through a Canvas LTI 1.3 for
1. Faculty
Faculty access MyOpenMath through assignments within their Canvas courses. Faculty can create a MyOpenMath assignment in Canvas by adding an External Tool assignment, selecting MyOpenMath, and then choosing or creating the MyOpenMath activity they want to link to the course.
2. Students
Students access MyOpenMath through the assignment link within their Canvas course. Once launched, students can complete assigned activities in MyOpenMath and, when configured by the instructor, their scores will be passed back to the Canvas Gradebook.
User Roles:
Faculty
Faculty use MyOpenMath to create, manage, and deliver online homework, quizzes, and assessments for their courses. Instructors can select or customize questions, organize course content, monitor student progress, and review grades within the platform. When integrated with Canvas, faculty can link MyOpenMath activities to Canvas assignments and, when enabled, automatically synchronize grades with the Canvas Gradebook.
Students
Students use MyOpenMath to complete homework assignments, quizzes, and other learning activities assigned by their instructors. Through the Canvas integration, students can access assigned work directly from their Canvas course, complete activities in MyOpenMath, and receive feedback on their performance. Students can also view assignment scores and track their progress throughout the course.
Technical Notes:
- Saint Louis University uses MyOpenMath as an external tool (LTI) integrated with Canvas.
- A MyOpenMath user account is created and managed through the Canvas integration; separate account creation is typically not required.
- MyOpenMath assignment scores can be automatically transferred to the Canvas Gradebook when the assignment is configured appropriately.
- Changes to assignment settings in MyOpenMath may affect the corresponding Canvas assignment and grade synchronization.
- If students receive a message indicating that a course or assignment link has not been established, the instructor may need to open and initialize the MyOpenMath assignment from Canvas.
- Legacy MyOpenMath links and assignments may behave differently from assignments created using the current LTI integration method.
- Course copies and imports may require instructors to verify that MyOpenMath links remain properly associated with the new Canvas course.
