Summary

Announcement about publishing Canvas courses and information how to publish courses and individual modules within courses.

Body

Campus Notification:

Dear Faculty and Staff,

As we look ahead to the start of our first fall semester with all courses in Canvas, we want to share important information about making courses visible to your students.

Just as in Blackboard, courses in Canvas must be published for students to access them. Canvas is set up to allow enrolled students to access *published courses* one week prior to the start of the term.

So, if you are teaching in the traditional fall semester that begins on August 25, students can access your courses on August 17 if the courses have been published.

If you do not want students to be able to access your courses before the semester begins, make sure your courses are *unpublished* until you are ready for students to view them. As a reminder, modules and other content items also must be published for students to access them, once your course has been published.

Publishing/Unpublishing Canvas Courses:

A course's state (published or unpublished) determines whether or not students can see the course.
There are three ways where you control if your course is published in Canvas:

  1. The Course Home Page sidebar
  2. The Course Setup Checklist
  3. The Dashboard

Publishing/Unpublishing Modules:

Modules control the entire flow of your course and its content. Through the use of them, instructors can reveal course content at the pace they wish students to experience it.
