Question?
How can I assign a video assignment for my students in Canvas?
Answer
- Navigate to your course in Canvas.
- Create an Assignment Folder in Panopto by clicking 'Panopto Video' in the Canvas navigation menu to access the course video folder. (Here is a link to documentation on how to create an Assignment Folder as a sub folder in your Panopto course folder.) You can get a link to the new folder by clicking the folder, opening the folder in Panopto by clicking the little arrow in a box icon at the top right side of the page, and then copying the URL from the address bar at the top of your browser.
- Select the Assignments tab, located in the left-hand navigation, and then click the +Assignment button in the top right to add a new assignment.
- In the assignment editor, fill out the assignment and instructions in the text box. Instructions for what students can expect from the submission process can be found here.
Tips for providing your students with instructions:
- Copy and paste the link above to provide your students with a "how-to" guide of submitting their assignments.
- Add a direct link to the assignment folder (if you're using one): click the Assignment Folder that you created in Panopto, then click the box with an arrow icon at the top of the page to open it in a new tab. Finally, copy the URL from the address bar in your browser. You can paste that into a link in the assignment instructions.
- Note that students can also upload and share videos from their personal 'My Folder' in Panopto.
- As you set up the assignment in Canvas, make sure that the Submission Type is set to Online and then set to Text Entry, so that students have access to the Panopto embed tool, which is a plug icon in the text editor.
- Click Save at the bottom to save the assignment, and then select Publish when you are ready for students to review it. The Publish button will now state Published to indicate that your students can view it. Students now have the ability to submit their Panopto recordings here for you to review.
- To review and grade the student submissions, navigate to the Assignment and click SpeedGrader in the upper right corner.
- Complete the assessment of the submission by entering a grade.
