How Do I Get New Software Installed?

Summary

Overview of the steps required to get new software installed on your SLU computer.

Body

Ownership/Licensing:

Before software can be installed on any machine, the University needs to have the rights to do so. We already have permission to install many university-standard applications because of enterprise licensing. Other software may be useful and even necessary but does not fall under an enterprise license. This software must be purchased by each department if needed.

If you don't know whether or not SLU has already licensed the application you need, you may reach out to the Service Desk (314-977-4000) to find out.

Examples of University Licensed Applications:

  • Panopto
  • Zoom
  • Microsoft Office
  • Endnote
  • SPSS (on SLU-managed machines)

Examples of Software That Departments Must Purchase:

  • Adobe Acrobat Pro
  • Adobe Creative Suite
  • ATLAS.ti
  • SAS

Acquiring Your Application:

If the software you need is already licensed through the university, and you have a Windows machine, it may already be available for install through Software Center or via ITS Downloads.

If the software you need is not already licensed through the University, you'll need to have your departmental purchaser see about buying a license.

If you need to install software on a personal computer that doesn't belong to SLU, you may need to get an individual license for that machine. This is not necessary for Microsoft Office, or Endnote (for more information, www.slu.edu/its/downloads-and-discounts/index.php) but is required for applications like SPSS, SAS, and ATLAS.ti (to purchase a license for these go to billpay.slu.edu/C20197_ustores/web/store_cat.jsp?STOREID=69&CATID=125).

Getting ITS Involved:

After you've addressed the licensing issue and you need the software installed, follow the steps below:

  1. Point your web browser to ask.slu.edu/TDClient/30/Portal/Requests/ServiceDet?ID=54.
(That's the Software Installation/Application Whitelisting service request form.)
  2. Once on that page, click on the blue button to the right labelled Request this Service.
  3. Then fill out the form to have your software installed.
