Body
Saint Louis University maintains the slu.edu second level domains. In general only top-level college sites, major centers and business units, and recognizable services will be granted a third-level domain (e.g., mba.slu.edu and canvas.slu.edu). Third-level domains must be approved by University Marketing and Communications before ITS will provide assistance with provisioning the domain and name records.
General Considerations for Third-Level Domains / URLS
- Unambiguous, specific, and descriptive.
- Generally recognized as a word (e.g., news) or a common abbreviation.
- Unique to the services offered and not likely to represent services offered by any other SLU unit.
- Low probability of conflict with other current or future Third-level URL requests for websites, services, programs, or systems.
- Unlikely to be confused with another university unit
- Unlikely to be misspelled in ways that would result in confusion with another Third-level URL.
- Free from existing or potential copyright or trademark infringements.
- Aligned with the university’s current or anticipated strategic initiatives or objectives.
Approval Required
All requests for third-level domains (x.slu.edu) must be reviewed by the Director of Web Services, Marketing and Communications Department. Requests are considered on a first-come, first-served basis. Because Third-level URLs are highly important, submitters should plan on an extended review cycle. A response to a request should be expected within 10 business days, but additional time may be required to work with the requestor to identify a Third-level URL that both meets their needs and complies with this naming standard.
- Please review the full URL Standard for complete information on these requirements.

Registration of Non-EDU Domains for SLU Related Activities (.com, .org, .net, .io, etc.)
While alternative registrar services are an option for individuals, ITS and Marcom facilitate domain registration via a University-sponsored Hover.com account. Utilizing this service is highly recommended. Registering your domain through Hover.com with assistance from Marcom or ITS can help prevent potential future complications. The Hover.com is supported by multiple team members and the registration and renewals are paid through ITS funding.
Before you purchase a non-edu domain for University business, we strongly encourage you to consult with the appropriate Marketing & Communications and ITS personnel in order to avoid unforeseen issues arising from the use of that domain. All domains paid for with University funds and used for university-related activities are subject to the University’s Appropriate Use and related policies.
