Protecting Instructor recordings as intellectual property.

[ A useful response to an instructor who wants to manage access to Panopto recordings]

By default the My Folder permissions are set to Specific Users and the only individual added to that folder is you, the owner.

We often see people making a sub-folder and putting content in that folder, changing the settings to Anyone at your organization with the link. That defeats the system. That's when everyone at your organization can see your recordings in Everything.

The preferred method of managing access to content is to actually let the Panopto system do it's job as designed.

Each Canvas course has a folder that is created to match the unique name created for each semester's course. Individuals enrolled in the course are eligible for access to the content specific to that course in the particular semester.  They cannot see content in the same course for last semester, nor will they be able to see content in the same course next semester.

My Folder is not the place to be serving up content. It is really more like a "Sandbox" for you to create and archive content for use later.  https://support.panopto.com/s/article/Use-My-Folder

I am so glad you asked because this is one of the questions we get a lot. If you want, I can get a person from Faculty Support at the ATC to go over this on a Zoom call and show you how this works from an Admin perspective. That will help to better understand Panopto and the available options.
