Locating a Workstation Name, Service Tag, or Computer Name

What is a workstation name or service tag?

Your computer has a unique name that helps it stand out and connect with other devices in SLU's systems. Whether you're using a Mac or Windows device, knowing how to find your computer name is handy for troubleshooting and finding your device information within ITS systems. This user-friendly guide will walk you through the easy steps to locate your computer name on both Mac OS and Windows operating systems.

How do I find this on Windows?

To find your service tag, look for a white sticker on your computer that contains the unique identification code.
If you are unable to locate the white service tag sticker on your device, this information can also be found within the computer itself.

Windows 10 - Using Settings:

  1. Click on the Start button in the bottom left corner of your screen. (It has the Windows logo on it.)
  2. From the Start menu, click on the Settings gear icon. (It looks like a little gear.)
  3. In the Settings window, click on System. (It has a laptop and a screen icon.)
  4. Look on the left side of the System settings, and you'll see About. Click on it.
  5. Your computer name will be listed under Device specifications.

Windows 11 - Using Settings:

  1. Click on the Start button at the bottom of your screen. (It is the simplified Windows logo.)
  2. From the Start menu, click on the Settings gear icon. (It looks like a little gear.)
  3. The Settings window will default to the System page.
The computer name should appear at the top with the model name below it.

ITS will usually request the device name or service tag; both of which are present there within the device name.
FOR EXAMPLE: If your device name is  ITS-EX12345, your service tag would be EX12345.

How do I find this on MacOS?

NOTE: Mac computers on campus will not have a white sticker with a service tag as seen on Windows devices.

Option 1 - Using System Preferences:

  1. Click on the Apple logo in the top left corner of your screen. (It looks like a colorful apple.)
  2. From the drop-down menu, select System Preferences.
  3. In the System Preferences window, click on Sharing. (It has a blue and white icon with a folder and an arrow.)
  4. Look at the top of the Sharing window, and you'll see your computer name listed there.

Option 2 - Using About Your Mac:

  1. Click on the Apple logo in the top left corner of your screen.
  2. From the drop-down menu, select About Your Mac.
  3. This will populate a window that shows you your Device Information. Select More Info.
  4. Once on this page, you should see the Name field at the top.
