Google File Permission Denied

Context:

Individuals who create Google resources can restrict who has access. Sometimes we are told that we don't have permission to access a document when, in fact, we do have permission. The reason for this error is that the web browser does not recognize the user as signed into their SLU Google account. If you have permission to access a Google file but it won't let you, follow the directions below.

How To:

NOTE: The PDF to the right has these instructions and includes screen captures if this would be useful.

  1. Open Chrome and click on the three dots in the upper right corner of the browser window.
  2. Click the New Incognito window option.
  3. Paste the link to the Google resource that needs permission in the address bar and press Enter.
  4. You should see the Google Sign In Page.
In the Email or phone field, enter your SLU Google account address.
(This is your SLUNetID followed by @slu.edu.)
Then click the blue Next button.
    Click the Learn More link.
  5. Based on that account address, you will be presented with the official SLU login screen. As usual, enter your SLUNetID and password and click the Sign In button.
  6. Proceed with your multi-factor authentication method.
  7. You should then see the document you were trying to access.
However, occasionally you will be presented with information about why you couldn’t access the document. If so, confirm that you no longer see a Sign In button in the upper left. It should have an icon or your initials. At this point, paste the link to the document into the address bar at the top of the browser window and press Enter.
  8. Now you should see the document you were trying to access.
