Enrolling iPhone in Intune for Outlook Email

Overview:

In order to provide the appropriate layer of security for our @health.slu.edu accounts, the Intune Company Portal must be installed and configured on mobile devices to access those email accounts. Follow the process below to install and configure the Intune Company Portal on your iPhone or iPad and then add Outlook to the tool for email access.

NOTE: If you would like a document with all of these steps including screen captures illustrating this process, a PDF is available to the right.

Requirements:

Your iPhone or iPad must adhere to the following:

  • Must not be jailbroken (hacked)
  • Must have pin passcode of at least 6 characters
  • Must have a screen timeout and require passcode to login

Installing Intune Company Portal:

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Settings app, select General, and select Software Updates, and see if you are up-to-date. If there is a pending iOS update, proceed with the update.
NOTE: It’s always recommended to have your iOS device connected to a charger for updates. It is a good precaution to be connected to a charger for this entire procedure.
  2. Once you’ve confirmed that your iPhone or iPad is up-to-date, open the App Store on your device and download the Microsoft Intune Company Portal.
  3. Once downloaded, open the app.
  4. Upon opening the app, press the blue Sign In button.
  5. If the Intune Company Portal has been run on your device before, there will be accounts listed. If your current SLU email address is one of those accounts listed, you may select that and tap the Continue button at the bottom of the screen and proceed to Step 9. Otherwise, sign in with another account and tap the Continue button.
  6. At the Microsoft Intune Sign in screen, enter your SLU email address (firstname.lastname@health.slu.edu) and tap the blue Next button.
  7. You will be taken to the blue SLU Central Login Service screen. Enter your SLU Net ID and Password.
  8. You will be prompted to confirm your identity through Okta. Select your preferred method of authentication and provide confirmation.
  9. You will be presented with a screen stating Get notified so you don’t lose access. Tap the Ok button at the bottom of the screen.
  10. A pop-up screen will appear to confirm that the Company Portal app will send you notifications. Tap the Allow button.
  11. You will then see a list of the steps you will need to complete in order to finish enrolling your device in the Intune Company Portal. These include:
  • Review privacy information
  • Download management profile
  • Install management profile
  • Check device settings

Click the Begin button at the bottom of the screen.

  1. You will be presented with a screen labelled Device management and your privacy. This allows you to choose between lists of what SLU can and can’t do on your device. If your device is University-owned, there are additional things that they can do including see all the apps installed and locate the device if lost. Once you review the lists, tap the Continue button at the bottom of the screen.
  2. You will be returned to the list of steps for enrollment, but Review privacy information is now checked green. Tap the Continue button at the bottom of the screen.
  3. This step opens a web page to download a configuration profile. It will prompt you if you want to allow this. Tap the Allow button.
  4. You will get another prompt confirming that the profile has been downloaded. Tap the Close button.
  5. That will reveal the instructions to Continue to Company Portal app by tapping the Continue button. Tap the button.
  6. You will be returned to the list of steps for enrollment, but Review privacy information and Download management profile are now checked green. Tap the Continue button at the bottom of the screen.
  7. This brings up the instructions for installing the management profile.
    Steps 19-26 will cover that.
  8. Exit out of the Intune Company Portal and open the Settings app.
  9. Select Profile Downloaded.
If you don’t see that option:
  • Scroll down and select General.
  • Select Profiles.
  1. Select Install.
  2. Enter your device’s passcode.
  3. Tap the blue Install button at the bottom of the screen.
  4. This brings you to a page that discusses the power provided via a Root Certificate. Select Install in the upper right corner of the screen.
  5. When prompted if you trust the profile’s source, tap Trust.
  6. Once complete, a page will appear stating Profile Installed. Tap Done.
  7. Open the Company Portal app again.
  8. Upon returning to the Company Portal app, you will be asked to identify if your device is owned by the University or you. Select the owner and tap the Continue button.
  9. You will be returned to the list of steps for enrollment, but all of the steps are now checked green. Tap the Done button at the bottom of the screen.
  10. You will now see the Apps screen. You want to add Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Authenticator to your device. If you do not see them on this screen, tap the blue text to the right that says, View all apps.
  11. Select each of the apps and tap the Install button.
  12. A message will appear: Pending install. Go to the home screen to check progress.
  13. You will then get a pop-up notification for each of the apps stating that SLU is about to install and manage them. Tap the Install button.
  14. Once completed, all apps should be visible on your home screen. Feel free to place them in useful locations. You will not need to open the Intune Company Portal to access Outlook. You can run Outlook directly from its icon. Though you’ll need Microsoft Authenticator installed, you will never need to run it directly. Outlook accesses Microsoft Authenticator itself when needed.

Configuring Outlook:

  1. Tap the Outlook icon from your home screen to run the app.
  2. Outlook should recognize your SLU email address (firstname.lastname@health.slu.edu). If it does, tap the Skip button at the bottom of the screen and proceed to Step 5. If it does not, tap the Add Account button.
  3. At the next screen tap the Add button.
  4. Enter your SLU email address (firstname.lastname@health.slu.edu), and log into your account if prompted.
  5. You should now see your Outlook inbox and have access to your SLU email account.
